Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo signed a new deal with Manchester City in which he extended his contract to two more years. The 27-year-old’s new deal means he will remain at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2027.
Cancelo has since been one of the Premier League’s star performers since his arrival, and now he has been rewarded with improved terms on his £80,000-a-week deal after establishing himself as a key player in Pep Guardiola’s side. Despite a slow debut season at Manchester City, following a high-profile switch from Italian giants Juventus in 2019, the 27-year old has gone on to become instrumental behind the Premier League champions’ recognisable style of play.
Cancelo made the transfer for 65 million euros in the summer of 2019, just a year after Juventus had picked him up from Valencia for 40 million euros.
The 27-year-old has scored seven goals and registered a further 14 assists in his 106 appearances, along with winning three major trophies.
“Manchester City is a fantastic club, so I am incredibly happy to have signed this new agreement,” he said.
“City players have everything they need to reach their full potential, with amazing facilities, world-class teammates and an incredible manager who pushes us every single day. There is nowhere better to play football and it’s a pleasure to work here. I have so much I want to achieve before my career ends, and Manchester City offers me the best chance of fulfilling my ambitions.”
“This new contract means I now have complete focus on improving my game and winning more trophies with this team.”
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “Joao is the ultimate professional. He absolutely loves football and applies himself every single day in a bid to become better. He is so versatile. Whether he plays right-back, left-back or in midfield, he operates at the same high level. That is a dream for a manager.”
“I am really happy he has signed, and I can’t wait to see him develop in the coming years.”
Joao Cancelo is one of the key players for Pep Guardiola. Under the Spanish manager, we have seen him flourishing rapidly, and now he is one of the best full-backs who can play on both the right and left wing. It was Guardiola who transformed him and helped him to be a complete player.
Manchester City has done a great job by extending the contract of the Portuguese full-back. As the season is getting more intriguing, the club cannot lose its concentration on the contract deals. So, they are wrapping up the extensions before the international break gets over. Cancelo’s deal will be an exciting news for the fans, just like their new signing Julian Alvarez.
